Functional Capacity Assessments

At Walking the Journey, we provide Functional Capacity Assessments to support individuals, families, and support teams in understanding a person’s unique strengths, challenges, and support needs.

A Functional Capacity Assessment (FCA) is a comprehensive evaluation that looks at how a person manages daily life across different domains. The assessment identifies what is working well, what barriers may be present, and what supports or adjustments are needed to build independence, participation, and wellbeing.

Our assessments are holistic and neuroaffirming, considering not only skill development but also the impact of environment, sensory needs, executive functioning, and mental health.

Why an FCA may be needed

  • To support NDIS access or plan reviews with clear evidence of support needs
  • To provide recommendations for reasonable and necessary supports under the NDIS
  • To guide goal setting and ensure supports are aligned with what matters most to the individual
  • To assist families, support workers, and educators in creating strategies that promote independence, participation, and quality of life.

What the FCA involves

A combination of interviews, observations, and questionnaires with the individual and their support network

  • Exploring functional domains such as:
    • Self-care
    • Self-Management
    • Communication
    • Social Interactions
    • Learning
    • Mobility
  • A detailed written report with tailored recommendations, which can be shared with the NDIS, other professionals, and support teams

Our Approach

We recognise that every individual has their own journey. Our assessments are:

  • Person-centred – respecting identity, preferences, and voice
  • Strength-based – focusing on abilities as well as challenges
  • Collaborative – working closely with the individual, their family, and support network
  • Evidence-informed – using recognised tools, professional expertise, and lived experience to provide high-quality recommendations

Functional Capacity Assessments are billed at the hourly Developmental Educator rate of $193.99. On average, an FCA requires approximately 13 hours to complete, which includes all interviews, observations, analysis, and the final written report.
