Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach us at walkingthejourney8@gmail.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.

We are able to support children (up until approx. 16 years) and their families but depending on the supports needs we can also support Adults.

If you are an adult looking for support services, please send us an email so we can have a conversation and see if we are able to support the individual.

Our fees are in line with the NDIS pricing arrangement. This is $193.99 per hour for all DE services for NDIS and non-NDIS participants.

Typically sessions are 1 hour in total. This includes 45 mins therapy session and 15 min admin/case note writing. Our staff do however, prioritize the individuals needs over a set time of the session so if there is a need for less or more time, this can be discussed at the intake meeting.

The frequency of sessions is determined based on the individual's needs and goals during the initial assessment and planning stages. Sessions can also be adjusted flexibly to accommodate any changes in circumstances or family situations that may arise during the support period.

The first session typically involves an initial assessment to understand the individual's needs, strengths, and goals. These may be explored over a few sessions, followed by the development of a personalized plan.

If you have existing reports from previous supports, it can be helpful to have these relevant documents ready, including past assessments, reports, and notes on current challenges and goals.

The goal-setting process within Walking the Journey is primarily driven by the individual and their family, with the clinician providing support. Goals are regularly monitored, and progress summaries are typically provided at the end of each term. If a goal is achieved, we will collaboratively establish new goals as needed.

Yes, at Walking the Journey, we prioritize a neuro-affirming, person-centered, and strength-based approach. We honor that each person has a unique brain and learning style, and we strive to place autistic identity at the center of all our supports.

A neuro-affirming approach acknowledges and values the diverse ways in which individuals’ brains function, emphasizing respect for different neurological experiences and identities. This approach supports the belief that there is no single “normal” brain function or learning style.

At Walking the Journey, we apply a neuro-affirming approach by:

  • Recognizing and Valuing Diversity: We respect and appreciate the unique neurological profiles and experiences of each individual.
  • Tailoring Support: We design support strategies that are personalized to fit your specific needs and strengths, rather than applying a one-size-fits-all solution.
  • Promoting Autistic Identity: We ensure that autistic identity and experiences are central to the support we provide, focusing on empowering individuals and honoring their self-identified needs.
  • Creating Inclusive Environments: We strive to create supportive and inclusive environments that accommodate different sensory, cognitive, and emotional needs.

By integrating these principles, we aim to provide effective and respectful support that align with your unique differences.

As the name suggests, we recognize and understand that starting the journey with an autism diagnosis can be overwhelming. At Walking the Journey, we offer a hands-on, supportive approach that includes comprehensive assessments, the creation of tailored support plans, and the provision of resources and strategies to help you and your child. Our dedicated team is here to guide and support you every step of the way.

Family and caregivers play a vital role in supporting and reinforcing the strategies and skills taught during therapy sessions. Walking the Journey acknowledges and respects parents and caregivers as the child's first teachers, valuing their perspectives throughout the process. We work collaboratively as part of a team, with parents serving as essential members of this team.

Our staff are committed to a collaborative approach that encompasses the individual, their families, teachers, allied health professionals, and all other key figures in their life. We prioritize a multidisciplinary approach to establish a comprehensive support system for both the individual and their family. This often involves working alongside professionals such as occupational therapists, speech therapists, psychologists, and educators to provide integrated and cohesive supports.

Like all allied health professionals, Developmental Educators (DEs) are highly qualified individuals with extensive education in disabilities. Some DE's choose to specialize in specific interest areas, which requires additional study and expertise. Here at Walking the Journey, our DEs specialize in Autism in childhood and parental support. Developmental Educators have a distinct focus on the holistic development of individuals with disabilities, integrating social, behavioral, educational, and community aspects into their practice.
